About to begin his ninth season as a member of the coaching staff at Miami University, assistant coach Chris Bergeron has been a part of six 20-win seasons, four trips to the NCAA Tournament, one CCHA Championship and has helped the Red and White finish either first or second in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association in three of the last five years. A native of Wallaceburg, Ontario, he is heavily involved in the recruiting process and works extensively with Miami's forwards and works with assistant coach Brent Brekke.
Under his guidance, six Miami forwards have earned all-CCHA accolades, including Derek Edwardson, who was a first-team performer in 2003-04 in addition to earning CCHA Player of the Year honors. The last two seasons, Bergeron has helped two RedHawks, Nathan Davis and Ryan Jones, land All-American honors. Davis was a first-team selection in 2006-07 and a second-teamer and Jones earned first team honors in 2007-08. Both have now signed with NHL teams.
Additionally, Davis became just the third Miamian to compete at the International Ice Hockey Federation's World Junior Championship when he served as an assistant captain for Team USA at the 2006 tournament in British Columbia.
Bergeron rejoined former teammate and current RedHawk head coach Enrico Blasi prior to the 2000-01 season as the second member of the coaching staff to come from Miami's 1992-93 CCHA Championship team. During that season, which culminated in Miami's first conference title and NCAA Tournament berth, Bergeron scored a team-high 61 points on 21 goals and 40 assists. Along with his offensive achievements that year, the four-year letterwinner was named the CCHA's Best Defensive Forward as well as Miami's Most Outstanding Senior. Bergeron graduated from Miami in 1993, earning a bachelor's degree in education.
Prior to his return to Oxford, Bergeron played professionally for seven years, including stints with the Adirondack Red Wings (AHL), the Birmingham Bulls (ECHL), the Toledo Storm (ECHL), Cincinnati Cyclones (IHL) and the Columbus Cottonmouths (CHL). He also has coaching experience at the professional level, having served as a player/assistant coach with the Port Huron Bordercats of the United Hockey League for two seasons.
Bergeron resides in Oxford with his wife, Janis, eight-year-old son, Logan, and five-year-old son, Connor.
